Lastly, I have never played a melody on any stringed instrument; this will be a completely new challenge for me. I discovered how I learn new instruments and how my future students may learn their new instruments. The process of this project began with me learning how to tune a ukulele properly; I then learned some basic chords, just as an introduction to the instrument. Next, I chose a song that really meant something to me; I made this decision because I knew I'd be working with the song quite a bit, so I wanted to work on something that I would enjoy. Once I chose my song, I looked through the chords; after this, I looked up the tabs for the chords and learned them quickly. As far as the arrangement of the tune, I didn't change very much. With that said, I took my own liberties in how I played the chords (as far as timing/strumming patterns/etc) and changed only one chord in the song because I felt that it fit just a bit better. However, the challenging part for me in this project was the transition between chords/fingerings, which has always proven to be my biggest struggle when it comes to stringed instruments. For this reason, I really spent time working through the transitions slowly and as efficiently as possible. For me, this was the most effective way to approach the tune; I think that this is true for many people and may be true for my future students. I think this project helped me to come to terms with who I am as a learner and how I can help my future students. If they are struggling with chord transitions, for example, I now have my own experience to pull from when helping them.
I think technology and the technological advances we've made in terms of music really helped me accomplish this project. For example, when I needed to figure out the chords to the song, a simple google search got me the answers I needed. Then, when I needed visuals (for me, these were tabs), another google search helped me figure out how to play. I was even able to document my experience thanks to technology. Thanks to modern technology, creating video diaries is a very simple process; this can be done on a phone, computer, tablet, or camera. These diaries were also incredibly useful for tracking my progress. If a future student does not have access to these technologies, they can always track their progress with audio recordings or a written diary. This project helped me to see how useful technology is in situations of contemporary musicking, and it's helped me to consider how I can use that technology to aid my future students in their learning.

Musicianship Project: Mued 206

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/musicianship-project-mued-206

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/musicianship-project-mued-206#comments

MUED 206

This project involved myself and a partner learning and arranging a song on guitar, percussion, woodwinds, and vocals, recording the finished product, and notating our arrangement. Performance VideoThe performance can be viewed here!ScoreReflection When approaching this project, my partner, Kaylee, and I first went through the list of Billboard Hot 100 songs. We listened for songs that we enjoyed, were neither overly simple or overly complicated, and songs that we could see having many different instrumental lines and arrangements. Once a song was decided, Kaylee and I discussed our strengths and which instruments and parts of the song to play based on those strengths.
To learn the song, Kaylee and I found sheet music as well as chord charts. We learned the guitar chords first, as this was the biggest challenge both Kaylee and I faced. Next, we examined the sheet music to determine which parts of the song could be changed into woodwind sections. For example, we changed what was originally an electric guitar solo into a melody for the alto saxophone. In the bridge of the song, we were able to create a chord reduction and pull bass notes out to be played on the clarinet. For percussion, we listened to the original song and attempted to duplicate what we heard, with some minor simplifications. Vocals remained relatively true to the original, apart from our improvised harmonies. To notate the arrangement, we chose traditional notation for vocals, woodwinds, and percussion combined with chords written above each measure. To record, we chose the website Bandhub. Beginning the recording on time with a backing track proved rather difficult, but once we got it, we were successful. Recording took several takes, but nothing is perfect on the first try.
I firmly believe that this project made me a better musician. Because we had to play woodwind instruments in concert pitch and notate said pitches, we were forced to learn to properly transpose instruments. This is a process that I previously understood in theory but now understand in practice. This project also forced me to practice my new instruments: guitar and alto saxophone. While I have learned and practiced these instruments throughout the semester, this project forced me to truly become acquainted with them. In order to play the song straight through for recording, I had to play almost without flaw.
Finally, I believe this project helped me to become a better learner and a better instructor. This process has helped me to understand myself better; I now know how to practice new instruments in a way that best fits my learning style. Because of going through this process, I’ve also learned what struggles my future students may encounter when learning a new song on their own, learning a new instrument, or when transposing instruments. I can now identify with their issues and facilitate their learning.

Musicianship Project Reflection

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/musicianship-project-reflection

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/musicianship-project-reflection#comments

MUED 271

This semester, I, along with my group members Theresa Perez (whose reflection can be found here) and Jacob Reeves (whose reflection can be found here), developed a cover of P!nk's What About Us. We developed this cover completely by ear, which was a relatively new experience for me. Our final project can be viewed here.
Our group approached this project by first looking through a list of the Billboard Hot 100 hits. We then found a song that was approachable at our current level but not overly simple and one that also had a good message. Once we decided on a song, we listened to it to determine what parts we needed and who could do each part. It was decided that I could handle piano, Theresa could cover vocals, and Jacob could cover percussion. We then learned our parts individually and recorded the parts once we felt comfortable enough to do so. A big issue that we encountered upon recording was staying with one another. We did have cases of illness while attempting this project, which made it fairly difficult to get together. This is where being able to record individually was useful. However, we found it difficult to begin with a backing track, so we tried to set the tempo with piano and listen to that recording to do the rest of the parts. However, this did not work incredibly well, as we ended up out of sync with one another. In the end, we got back together, but the recording could use some improvement. If we were to revisit this assignment, I think a better way to approach it would be to get together to practice our parts as an ensemble. This would have given us a better idea of what the tempo needed to be and what parts needed improvement. I would also say that we could try to use a metronome as a backing track, rather than the recording of the song; this would have allowed us to begin playing or singing when we felt appropriate but also stay together.
This project enriched me as a musician, as I am a vocalist - not a pianist. However, I felt comfortable enough with this song to attempt piano. This project forced me to use my ears to learn something other than the vocal melody - something I am not used to doing. This stretched my ears and led me to better musicianship as a whole. I was also forced to practice the piano more than I normally would in order to learn this song properly. While the piano in this song is generally the same throughout the song, the nature of our recording software required me to play for a full five minutes. Playing a song this long is not something that I do often, so this also stretched me as a musician. A big issue that I had when approaching this project was playing the song straight through without messing up. In the final recording, I mess up a chord one time, but this was the cleanest recording I was able to get. While I could play the song successfully, piano is not my main instrument, and play a full song was difficult for me. In addition, I did have some issues with tempo since we were struggling to use a backing track. If I were to attempt this project a second time, I would use a metronome as a backing track so that I could keep myself on track without trying to play with a recording in my ears. I would also practice more before attempting to record, as I had to record many times before getting a nice run-through.

Mikey's Makey-Makey Ukulele

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/mikeys-makey-makey-ukulele

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/mikeys-makey-makey-ukulele#comments

MUS150

For this project, Kaylee and I responded to the prompt that called for us to create a way for a physically disabled student to be able to be involved in our ensemble. Through working on this project, I learned about all of the different ways that a potential student could be involved in an ensemble, even if they are differently-abled. In our imagining, we have a young man, Mikey, who wants to be a part of our group. He only has good use of his hands. So, we thought, if he wants to be a part - let him! We came up with a way for him to help play our live music during rehearsals and performances! This is just one way to have someone involved, too! If a music teacher ever encounters this obstacle with a student, there are so many resources and so many options to get involved. I learned not to say no to the challenge. As far as technical challenges go, one of our biggest issues was figuring out how to play actual songs with just your hand and a makey-makey. We realized that we could put chords into Scratch and go from there! However, in order to get our chords into Scratch, we had to get recordings from Soundcloud, edit them in SoundTrap, and then upload them into Scratch - and that was just for one key. So, a new issue that we are facing is how to get multiple keys into Scratch OR how to transpose the key we already have uploaded. (That issue is one we will attempt to tackle for our final project.) With that said, we can play basically any song we would care to play at this point...it just has to be transposed into C Major. Another issue we dealt with was how to use the makey-makey cords and alligator clips with your fingers without having them flop around everywhere. The solution for this was a glove; we were able to run the cords up the gloves on the inside (so they had more stability), and then we just popped the clips out of a small hole on each finger! In my future of music education, I can take this idea of this project and apply to future ensembles. As I said before, I learned not to say no to this challenge - any student can be involved. If, in the future, I have a student come in with a physical disability or anything that may deter another teacher from permitting their involvement in an ensemble, I will think back to this project, and I will say, "Mikey could do it...so can this student. We will find a way!"

DAW Project: We'll Get to the Mountain Top

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/daw-project-well-get-to-the-mountain-top

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/daw-project-well-get-to-the-mountain-top#comments

MUS150

For this piece, I was inspired by the photo below. While creating this piece, I encountered some software issues yet again. However, this piece went much more smoothly than the first piece that I tried to create in the same software. I think that using preexisting clips and adding to them, as well as editing them, made the process easier and faster. The first thing I did for this process was listen to the audio samples provided for us, and I decided which ones meant the most to me and which ones I could tell some sort of story with. I then began to layer my samples into my software. Then, I decided which samples I wanted to keep close to the originals and which ones I wanted to edit heavily. I wound up deciding to keep the spoken tracks close to their original copies so my audience could understand what was being said more easily. The tracks I changed heavily were the instrumental tracks. I did encounter a few issues with what I wanted to do and what my software would allow me to do. For example, I wanted my drum beat to match up better with my string sample, but I didn't want to speed up my drums; instead, I wanted to slow down my string sample. I discovered that every time I attempted this, the audio was choppy. Eventually, I figured out a way to take out the choppiness, but I ended up being unable to slow the strings down. To solve this issue, I figured out a way to work the existing tempo into my vision.

DAW Project: Even When It Hurts, Go Forward

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/daw-project-even-when-it-hurts-go-forward

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/daw-project-even-when-it-hurts-go-forward#comments

MUS150

This piece is called "Even When It Hurts, Go Forward."It is based on the photo below. When I look at this picture, I see a little girl who has been hurt by people in the past. I see a girl who has been torn apart by strangers. Yet, I see a girl who is walking with her head high - a girl determined to keep moving. That is how I interpreted this photo to create the piece. The new piece includes samples of a pre-existing song entitled, "Even When It Hurts." This song is about how even when life is the worst it can possibly be, we can still praise God with all that we have. When I thought about putting this little girl to music, the original song made so much sense to include. Ruby Bridges, the little girl in the picture, must have had it so rough at times. People probably cursed her name. To be the first little girl to desegregate schools in Louisiana? I can only imagine what she must have gone through and what people must have said about her. However, she kept walking - even when she had to be protected by a group of men. She kept her head up, and she kept moving forward. That is the feeling I want to evoke. Her face does not look necessarily happy, and I have no way of knowing what this little girl in the photo is thinking or feeling, but I can see her moving. I can see her facing her enemies. I can see her being uninterested in whatever anyone else has to see. I can see her in a dress, with a headband in her hair. I can see her with her bag, probably filled with her schoolbooks from the day. I can see her NOT looking down in shame. I can see her being brave. She must have known hurt more than most can imagine...yet, she woke up and went to school that day. Then, she walked out like it was nobody's business - surrounded by men who were there to make sure she was okay. But does she mind them? I may never know. The little girl in my interpretation could have walked out on her own, ready to face whatever came her way. For, even when her life her, she was ready to go forward and stand up for anything.

I created this work with the software Mulab. While creating, I knew I needed a deeper, fuller sound, so I added bass tracks, drum tracks, and a deep audio file. I did this because I knew the sound was too light and airy, while the photo is deep and conflicting. I made the work aesthetically pleasing by making sure any beats included fit within the tempo and MIDI file and by making sure any new notes included were all in the original key of the original piece of music. I hope that this work will evoke a sense of melancholic hope. When creating, I faced many struggles. The biggest was time - combined with a lack of software knowledge. This was a brand new experience for me, so to learn the software took me at least four hours of work, and that was before I was actually creating anything. As far as the software goes, I kept doing things one way, then trying to do them the same way when I wanted to create something new, but what I wanted to happen would turn out differently than anticipated. So, I kept erasing my work and starting over. This was very frustrating for me, and I eventually ran out of the time that I had set aside for this project. From this experience, I learned that you can create music out of little bits of what seems like nothing. I also learned that this process takes a VERY long time.

Even When It Hurts

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/even-when-it-hurts

http://mikaylabushkar.weebly.com/musicianship/even-when-it-hurts#comments

MUS150

- This song is called "Even When It Hurts" and was written by Joel Houston, a member of Hillsong United's songwriting crew; I simply added a harmony above the melodic line.- You may notice that this is not a common era piece, and it is not even one of classical nature, as you might expect. However, I chose this song because it has had a lot of meaning for me in my Christian life. Sometimes, life hurts, but even so, I can praise the Lord. I have had many nights where I have more questions than answers, but I know (just as this song says) that the Lord is there, and I will always praise him...even when I am not sure if I can get through my trials.
- I used Finale Notepad for this project, and my experience was a fairly pleasant one. The software is relatively simple to navigate; it only took a few minutes of looking over all of the buttons to realize which did what. I did have to look up how to add a harmonic line in the help index online, but that only took a few minutes, and soon I was on my way to writing that in. I would definitely use this software again, as it is pretty user friendly, and if I do happen to get stuck, there are many tutorials available online to help.

even_when_it_hurts.pdf

File Size:

52 kb

File Type:

pdf

Download File
